Budapest, Hungary – The Hungarian Foreign Minister has asserted that his country does not require permission or approval from the European Union for Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s visits to Russia. He emphasized that Hungary’s foreign policy is conducted in accordance with its national interests and not through directives from Brussels.
The minister explained that Budapest maintains open diplomatic relations with many international powers. He emphasized that direct communication with Moscow aims to serve Hungary’s interests, particularly those related to energy and regional security. He added that while the European Union may express differing opinions, this does not obligate Hungary to alter its sovereign choices.
He noted that the Hungarian government adopts an independent approach to its foreign policy. It believes that direct dialogue with Russia is essential for maintaining stability in the region and safeguarding the economic interests of the Hungarian people.
The remarks come amid ongoing tensions within the European Union over relations with Moscow, while Hungary maintains its right to make its own decisions free from political pressure.
