Cairo, Egypt – US Vice President J.D. Vance said that the Trump administration is seriously considering Ukraine’s request to purchase long-range US Tomahawk missiles. However, he stressed that the final decision “will only be made by the president himself.”

  • Internal and external balances

In an interview with an American network, Vance explained that the debate within the White House goes beyond the military dimension to broader political and strategic considerations. He noted that Trump “places the national interest of the United States above all other considerations” and that he will not take any step that might drag Washington into a direct confrontation with Russia.

complex political calculations

These statements come at a sensitive time, with Russia’s military escalation on the Ukrainian front continuing. This increases Kyiv’s pressure on its Western allies to acquire advanced weapons. However, the Tomahawk missile issue is one of the most complex issues within the US administration. These missiles have never been officially granted to any country outside NATO, making the decision burdened by strategic considerations.

What are Tomahawk missiles?

Tomahawk missiles are among the most prominent weapons in the US arsenal. They are long-range cruise missiles (with a range exceeding 1,500 kilometers) capable of striking precise targets deep within enemy territory. The United States has used them extensively since the 1991 Gulf War, through the 2003 Iraq War, and up to interventions in Syria and Libya. These missiles are known for their ability to fly at low altitudes to evade radar. This gives them a decisive strategic advantage.

Concern about escalation

Observers believe that the mere idea of supplying Kyiv with these missiles represents a strong signal to Moscow. However, it also raises fears that it could lead to an unprecedented escalation. Russia considers the introduction of long-range weapons into the conflict a “red line” that could prompt a direct response.

Internal and external balances

Politically, Trump is trying to balance his campaign promises not to be drawn into new wars with European pressure demanding greater US commitment to the continent’s security. Therefore, the issue remains open to all possibilities, awaiting the US president’s next decision.
