Cairo, Egypt – King Felipe VI of Spain, during his official visit to Cairo, stressed that the ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza is no longer just a local crisis. Rather, it represents a direct threat to regional and international stability. He emphasized that the catastrophic humanitarian situation requires urgent action from the international community. Furthermore, he warned that ignoring this tragedy could push the region toward further escalation.
Madrid and its position on the Palestinian issue
The Spanish monarch’s visit comes amid Madrid’s progressive stance on the Palestinian issue. Spain was among the first European countries to call for the recognition of the State of Palestine. Furthermore, it has been keen to affirm its commitment to international law and its rejection of the ongoing war that is claiming civilian lives.
The canceled arms deal with Israel
In a practical step that reflects this position, the Spanish government announced a few weeks ago the cancellation of an arms deal with Israel. It asserted that the continuation of the war in Gaza contradicts European values and human rights principles. The decision was widely welcomed in European human rights circles and was seen as a strong message of Madrid’s refusal to support any party that exacerbates the humanitarian tragedy.
For its part, Tel Aviv expressed its dissatisfaction with the Spanish decision, deeming it “biased.” European diplomatic circles, however, believe the move could open the door for other countries to reconsider their military dealings with Israel, thus increasing international pressure on it.
Displacement worsens in the southern Gaza Strip
On the ground, a large-scale exodus of Gaza residents toward the south continues, fleeing the escalating Israeli bombardment. Entire neighborhoods have been emptied of their residents, while humanitarian organizations have declared conditions in shelters unprecedentedly overcrowded. Food and medicine are also in short supply. UN estimates indicate that the humanitarian crisis has entered a critical phase, with medical services and basic facilities unable to continue.
Call for urgent action
The royal visit and its humanitarian messages intersect with repeated international calls for an immediate ceasefire. This requires ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches besieged civilians. In light of the ongoing displacement and worsening suffering, effective action has become an urgent necessity.
