Chitwan, Nepal — Nepalese authorities have initiated mass burials for hundreds of unidentified victims swept away by catastrophic flash floods and landslides. The emergency measure, executed in the Devghat forest of Chitwan district, follows rapid body decomposition and rising public health concerns. Furthermore, local officials confirmed the burial of 96 bodies on Saturday, with over 100 additional interments scheduled as recovery operations continue.

Identity Documentation and Genetic Preservation

More than 100 rescue workers, police officers, and forensic personnel are documenting remains, capturing photographs, and collecting DNA samples prior to burial. In addition, officials are implementing precise site-marking protocols above and below ground to ensure individual plots can be identified later. Consequently, thorough genetic databases and geographical records are being maintained to assist families seeking missing relatives.

International Assistance and Disaster Scale

Meanwhile, a forensic team from India has arrived to assist Nepalese experts with DNA analysis, while coordination with a specialized Chinese team remains underway. As a result, joint international efforts are helping manage the humanitarian crisis caused by glacial-burst floods that left nearly 750 dead and roughly 3,000 missing along the Nepal-China border.

Ultimately, the mass burials underscore the overwhelming scale of Nepal’s natural disaster and the severe strain on local response capacities. In conclusion, systematic DNA mapping and plot tracking offer a crucial framework for grieving families to eventually gain closure despite challenging field conditions.
