Nuuk, Greenland – Greenland’s Prime Minister confirmed that US President Donald Trump is no longer raising the idea of annexing the island to the United States. He noted that the US rhetoric on this issue has clearly changed. Furthermore, current discussions between the two sides are focusing on areas of mutual cooperation rather than sovereignty issues.
The Prime Minister explained that the Greenlandic government continues to strengthen its relations with the United States, Denmark, and its international partners, in a way that promotes economic development and maintains regional security. He emphasized that the future of the island will be decided solely by its people, in accordance with their right to self-determination.
He added that Greenland welcomes cooperation in the areas of investment, energy, rare minerals, and infrastructure. However, it rejects any proposals that infringe upon its political status or sovereignty. He noted that the government is working to expand its international partnerships in a way that serves the interests of its citizens and strengthens the island’s position in the Arctic region.
He pointed out that international interest in Greenland has increased in recent years due to its strategic location and vast natural resources. This has made it a focal point of competition among several major powers. Nevertheless, the island’s authorities consistently affirm that they will make decisions in accordance with their national interests.
The issue of Greenland’s annexation has resurfaced since 2019. At that time, during his first term, Trump floated the idea of purchasing the island from Denmark. However, the proposal was officially rejected by both Copenhagen and the Greenlandic government. Both sides emphasized that the island was not for sale and that its political future was non-negotiable.
Greenland, the world’s largest island, enjoys broad self-governance within the Kingdom of Denmark. Copenhagen, on the other hand, is responsible for defense and foreign policy. With increasing international interest in the Arctic region, the island’s government continues to stress the importance of preserving its sovereignty. It also focuses on promoting sustainable development and investing its natural resources for the benefit of its people.
