Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his country expects to receive proposals from the United States regarding possible formats for reviving the diplomatic process with Russia. This comes as part of international efforts to end the ongoing war.
In remarks reported by media outlets, Zelenskyy explained that Kyiv continues to coordinate with Washington and a number of international partners on the possibility of launching a new negotiating track. He also stressed that any potential agreement must guarantee the protection of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Ongoing diplomatic efforts
The Ukrainian president noted that diplomatic efforts are ongoing despite the continued military operations. He added that his country is open to any international initiatives that could achieve a just and lasting peace.
Zelensky stressed that any negotiation process must be based on clear security guarantees that prevent a recurrence of military escalation in the future.
Zelensky’s remarks come at a time of increasing Western diplomatic activity aimed at advancing a settlement between Moscow and Kyiv. There are also expectations of a greater role for the United States in formulating political proposals to revive negotiations.
Ongoing war and international pressure
Washington has repeatedly affirmed its continued military and political support for Ukraine. This support is offered alongside backing for any efforts aimed at ending the war through diplomatic means.
Ukraine has been embroiled in a full-scale war with Russia since February 2022. This war has resulted in significant human and material losses and has had far-reaching consequences for European security and global energy and food markets.
International actors continue to press for a political settlement, despite the persistent and profound disagreements between Moscow and Kyiv regarding the terms of any potential agreement.
