Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia launched a large-scale attack on his country using at least 800 drones. This was one of the largest aerial operations since the start of the war, resulting in the deaths of six people and injuries to dozens more.
In a post on the X platform, Zelenskyy explained that the Russian attack began at midnight and continued for many hours.
He also noted that drones continued to enter Ukrainian airspace throughout the attack.
Large-scale attack on western Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that the strikes targeted areas in the west of the country, some near NATO borders.
This represents a new escalation, raising fears of a wider geographical spread of the war.
He added that Ukrainian air defense systems and emergency teams responded to the successive waves of attacks.
This comes amid continued heightened alert in several targeted cities and regions.
Ukrainian authorities reported six deaths and several injuries, along with damage to infrastructure
and civilian facilities. Assessments and damage quantification are ongoing.
Continued escalation between Moscow and Kyiv
This attack is among the most extensive Russian drones strikes since the start of the war,
both in terms of the number of drones used and the range of targets within Ukrainian territory.
This development comes amid continued military escalation between Moscow and Kyiv.
Russia is intensifying its airstrikes, while Ukraine is working to bolster its air defenses with the support of its Western allies.
The proximity of some of these attacks to NATO borders is also raising growing international concerns
about the potential for the conflict to spread to Eastern Europe.
