Damascus, Syria – The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced in an official statement that the Counter-Terrorism Department, in cooperation with the Internal Security Command in rural Damascus, was able to thwart a sabotage plot that targeted the security of the capital Damascus and destabilized it.
The statement explained that the operation was the result of meticulous security monitoring of suspicious movements. Specialized units successfully detected a woman belonging to a terrorist cell as she attempted to plant an explosive device in front of the home of a religious figure near the Mariamite Church in the historic Bab Touma district. Thanks to their high level of preparedness and swift intervention, engineering teams were able to neutralize the threat and dismantle the device before it detonated, preventing any injuries or material damage.
The preemptive operation resulted in the arrest of all five members of the cell. Initial investigations revealed a startling surprise: the cell was linked to the Lebanese Hezbollah, and its members had received specialized military training abroad, including advanced skills in planting and rigging explosive devices.
The Ministry of Interior confirmed that investigations are ongoing on a wide scale to uncover all the circumstances of the case and identify all parties involved in this plot, in preparation for referring the detainees to the competent judiciary to receive their just punishment. This operation comes at a sensitive time, as the region witnesses major security developments, reflecting the vigilance of the security services in confronting any attempts to breach the security of the capital.
