Madrid, Tel Aviv – Relations between Spain and Israel have witnessed a marked escalation in tension in recent days. This comes amid an exchange of sharp criticism and increasingly heated political statements, raising concerns that relations between the two countries are entering a more complicated phase, potentially leading to a diplomatic break.
Taking additional diplomatic measures
This crisis stems from the Spanish government’s criticism of Israeli military operations. Madrid has repeatedly called for a ceasefire and adherence to international humanitarian law. Tel Aviv has viewed this as a clear bias against it, describing the Spanish statements as “unbalanced.”
In response, the Israeli Foreign Ministry summoned the Spanish ambassador to protest what it termed “hostile statements.” Meanwhile, media reports have not ruled out further diplomatic measures, which could include downgrading diplomatic representation between the two countries.
A widening gap in political positions
For its part, the Spanish government maintained its position, emphasizing that its criticism of Tel Aviv stems from its commitment to international law and human rights. It also stressed the need to protect civilians and avoid military escalation, which exacerbates the humanitarian situation in the region.
Observers believe this tension reflects a growing gap in political positions between the two sides. This is particularly evident given the shifts in European policy toward the conflict in the Middle East. This could negatively impact bilateral cooperation in various fields in the coming period.
