Official Iranian media announced on Thursday evening, April 10, 2026, the death of Kamal Kharrazi, head of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations and one of the أبرز architects of Iranian foreign policy, after succumbing to severe injuries he sustained about ten days ago.
The death comes following an airstrike attributed to the United States and Israel, which targeted his residence in the capital Tehran earlier this month.
Kamal Kharrazi, who previously served as Iranian foreign minister (1997–2005), had been hospitalized in critical condition since April 1, the day of the attack that also directly killed his wife.
He is considered one of the most seasoned diplomatic figures who maintained significant influence as a senior advisor to the Supreme Leader, continuing his advisory role even after leadership transitioned to Mojtaba Khamenei, making his death a major political loss at a highly complex regional moment.
According to international reports, targeting Kamal Kharrazi came while he was overseeing sensitive diplomatic tracks, including coordination for high-level meetings aimed at de-escalation. His death has raised warnings about undermining remaining diplomatic efforts, especially as the attack occurred amid an open military conflict involving regional and international powers.
Iranian agencies mourned Kamal Kharrazi as a “martyr” who fell in what they described as a “U.S.-Israeli aggression,” amid growing international anticipation of a potential Iranian response to the loss of one of the key pillars of its political and diplomatic system.
