Baghdad, Iraq – An Iraqi security source reported on Sunday afternoon that a drone crashed in an area near the perimeter of Baghdad International Airport. This prompted a security alert in the area surrounding the vital air facility. However, the incident resulted in no casualties or significant material damage.
Details of the incident in Al-Radwaniyah district
The source explained that the drone crashed in the village of Al-Ra’id, located in the Al-Radwaniyah district. This area is considered strategic, as it is one of the direct approaches to Baghdad International Airport. Upon receiving the report, security forces rushed to the crash site and established a tight cordon. Technical teams and explosives experts then began examining the wreckage to determine the type of drone and the materials it was carrying.
Ambiguity surrounds the objective and the implementing party.
As of yet, official security authorities have not released further details about the nature of the aircraft. It is also unknown whether it was on a reconnaissance or suicide mission targeting the airport or nearby military bases. Furthermore, initial investigations have not yet determined who launched the drone or the cause of its crash. It remains unclear whether the crash was due to a technical malfunction or electronic jamming.
It is worth noting that the Radwaniyah area and the vicinity of the airport witness similar security incidents from time to time. This prompts security forces to intensify monitoring and field surveys in nearby farms and open areas. These measures aim to ensure the safety of air navigation and the security of sovereign facilities in the capital.
