Tel Aviv, Israel – The Israeli army announced on Wednesday that it had assassinated Haj Youssef Ismail Hashem, the commander of Hezbollah’s southern front, in an airstrike targeting the Jnah neighborhood of Beirut. This operation comes amidst the most intense military escalation in recent memory in the southern suburbs of Beirut and the surrounding areas. This escalation represents a significant blow to the party’s field command structure.
Details of the operation and the objective
Israeli military spokesman Avichai Adraee explained via the “X” platform that the navy launched a precise attack targeting Hashem. He described him as “one of the pillars” of Hezbollah with over 40 years of military experience. Hashem had assumed command of the Southern Front, succeeding Ali Karaki, who was assassinated along with former Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah earlier this year. The Southern Front is considered the organization’s most vital unit, responsible for the main combat units (Nasr, Aziz, and Badr). This unit is also tasked with confronting Israeli forces and managing rocket barrages and suicide drone attacks toward the north. The Israeli military confirmed that eliminating Hashem will constitute a “significant obstacle” to the party’s ability to conduct defensive and offensive operations in southern Lebanon. It will also hinder the rebuilding of its weakened military capabilities.
Bloody toll in the Al-Janah area
On the ground, powerful explosions rocked the Jnah area of Beirut, triggering massive fires and sending plumes of smoke into the sky. The Lebanese Ministry of Health announced a final toll of seven dead and 26 wounded. This came amidst widespread destruction of residential buildings and property surrounding the targeted site. This strike, which coincided with a second strike targeting another Hezbollah commander in Beirut, indicates Israel’s determination to target the top tier of field military leaders. These attacks aim to undermine Hezbollah’s operational control on the ground and dismantle its command and control structure before any potential ground operations or political agreements.
