Bodrum, Turkey – In a new human tragedy within the tragedies of irregular migration, the Turkish Coast Guard announced on Wednesday the death of 18 migrants after a rubber boat carrying them sank in the Aegean Sea off the coast of Bodrum in southwestern Turkey.
Details of the incident
According to an official statement from the Coast Guard Command, the boat carrying dozens of migrants was spotted around 3:00 AM GMT. The statement indicated that the boat ignored repeated warnings to stop and attempted to flee at high speed. However, poor weather conditions and rough seas caused the boat to take on water. Ultimately, the boat capsized.
rescue operations
Upon receiving the report, Turkish authorities launched a large-scale search and rescue operation, supported by a helicopter dispatched from the nearby city of Izmir and three naval vessels. The efforts resulted in the rescue of 21 migrants alive. Meanwhile, the bodies of 18 others who drowned were recovered. Rescue teams are continuing their sea and air searches for any other possible survivors or missing persons.
A perilous road
The resort city of Bodrum is a major transit point for migrants seeking to reach nearby Greek islands, such as Kos, which lies just a few kilometers from the Turkish coast and serves as a gateway to the European Union.
Despite the perilous journey, the Aegean Sea continues to see a steady influx of thousands of migrants fleeing conflict and poverty in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. As a result, the sea has become a frequent scene of tragic shipwrecks that claim many lives annually. The Turkish Coast Guard has not yet disclosed the nationalities of the migrants aboard the boat. Furthermore, authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the departure of the vessel and those responsible for organizing it.
