Khartoum, Sudan – US diplomatic sources revealed intensive US efforts within the UN Security Council to push for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Sudan. This comes amid escalating internal conflict that threatens thousands of civilians and exacerbates the country’s displacement crisis.
The sources confirmed that Washington is working on a draft resolution demanding that all Sudanese parties immediately cease hostilities and facilitate humanitarian access to the most affected areas. The resolution also focuses on protecting civilians, hospitals, and schools from attacks.
This move comes after international reports indicated escalating violence in Khartoum and other cities. As a result, the United Nations and humanitarian organizations have warned the international community of the deteriorating humanitarian situation, particularly given the shortages of food and medicine and the rising numbers of internally and externally displaced persons.
US sources indicated that the draft resolution would garner support from some influential members of the Security Council. However, they noted that discussions might face challenges due to regional and international differences regarding the best approach to the Sudanese crisis.
Observers suggested that the success of this US initiative could pave the way for broader international cooperation in providing aid and protecting civilians. On the other hand, others warned that the conflict would continue if the international community failed to impose an immediate ceasefire.
