Athens, Greece – 22 migrants died and 21 others survived after their boat sank off the Greek coast while they were trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe.
Difficult weather conditions
Greek authorities confirmed that the survivors were from Bangladesh, South Sudan, and Chad,
adding that maritime rescue teams worked quickly to recover them amidst difficult weather conditions.
A Greek coast guard official said, “The sea conditions were harsh, and the rapid response helped save some lives,
but unfortunately, we lost 22 people.”
Reasons for the boat sinking
Migrants from Africa and Asia are increasingly attempting to reach Europe via the Mediterranean Sea,
despite the significant risks, including boat sinkings, unstable weather conditions, and a lack of safety equipment on board.
Greece continues to strengthen its maritime patrols in cooperation with European agencies to reduce drownings,
while providing medical and psychological support to survivors, investigating the causes of the sinkings,
and identifying those responsible for the illegal journey.
