Baghdad, Iraq – The Iraqi Ministry of Defense announced in an official statement a technical security incident in the far south of the country. At 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2026, a drone crashed inside the giant Majnoon oil field, located in the Al-Deir district of Basra Governorate. The statement clarified that the incident occurred within the area of responsibility of the 3rd Regiment of the 9th Brigade of the Energy Police Directorate. Official sources confirmed that the drone crashed suddenly within the field’s perimeter without exploding. This prevented a potential disaster at one of Iraq’s most important oil facilities.

Fortunately, the aircraft crash did not cause any material damage to the oil site’s infrastructure. No injuries were reported among the staff or security forces assigned to protect the site. Immediately after the incident, the forces stationed at the site notified the Basra Operations Command and the Al-Nashwa Police Station to take immediate action. Subsequently, specialized engineering teams and explosives disposal units were dispatched to the crash site. The aircraft is currently being dismantled and removed according to standard procedures. Furthermore, a technical investigation has been launched to determine the origin of the aircraft and the cause of the crash.
