Nairobi, Kenya – The death toll from floods that have been hitting Kenya since early March has risen to 88, as two rivers overflowed and large areas of farmland were affected.
There are growing fears of a worsening humanitarian crisis.
Widespread displacement and human losses
The floods displaced more than 34,000 people after inundating at least 21 counties.
They caused extensive damage to homes and infrastructure,
forcing thousands of families to flee in search of safer shelter.
Infrastructure damage
Western regions of the country experienced severe flooding after the Nyando River overflowed its banks.
This resulted in the submergence of parts of the vital Ahiru Bridge and disrupted traffic
on the Kiricho-Owase-Kisumu highway, affecting transportation and supply lines.
Fears of the crisis worsening
Current developments are raising increasing concerns about the deteriorating humanitarian situation,
particularly with damage to agricultural land and growing basic needs among those affected.
Rain continues, and the likelihood of the disaster spreading further in the coming days is increasing.
