Tel Aviv, Israel – Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz announced on Monday that Abu Hussein Ragheb, the commander of Hezbollah’s Nasr Unit, was killed in an Israeli military attack earlier that night. The Nasr Unit is one of Hezbollah’s units, covering the eastern region of southern Lebanon, stretching from Bint Jbeil in the east. The unit also forms part of the organization’s first line of defense along the border with Israel.
Mass displacement of the population
According to a statement from the Israeli Defense Minister’s office, the military escalation has displaced approximately 650,000 residents from Beirut’s southern suburbs and another half a million from southern Lebanon. The Israeli army had previously ordered the evacuation of residents from southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut until further notice. Furthermore, the statement emphasized the importance of protecting Israel’s borders and countering any threat from Hezbollah.
Military escalation and deterrence plans
Katz said the continued displacement reflects the army’s strength and deterrent capability, emphasizing that Israel will continue striking Hezbollah and targeting its military capabilities. He added that the decision to proceed with defending the northern towns is “morally and practically sound.” He also stated that the goal is to improve the security situation in the region and prevent a recurrence of attacks.
The position of the Lebanese government
The Israeli minister indicated that the Lebanese government had failed to uphold its commitments to disarm Hezbollah, allowing the organization to expand its influence southward. Katz stated, “The government assumed responsibility and signed agreements, but it has not honored them, and the result is increased Hezbollah military activity.”
Katz emphasized that residents of Israeli towns near the border would remain in their homes, stressing that the army’s primary mission is to protect these towns and ensure their security from airstrikes and tank fire.
This latest escalation reflects the ongoing tension between Israel and Hezbollah and comes amid concerns that the conflict could spread and impact the stability of Lebanon and the region.
