Tehran, Iran – In a dangerous military development that raises tensions in the region to unprecedented levels, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced on Saturday that it had carried out an air attack targeting an oil tanker in the waters of the Arabian Gulf.
This confirms that it had begun to actually implement previous threats to close the world’s most important shipping lane to energy traffic.
Details of the attack and the target location
According to an official statement carried by the Tasnim News Agency, affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC),
the oil tanker Prima, a Maltese-flagged vessel, was targeted while transiting near the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
The statement further explained that the attack was carried out by an explosive-laden (suicide) drone.
This drone directly struck the ship. As of yet, there are no precise reports regarding the extent of the material damage.
Also, there are no reports of any casualties among the tanker’s crew.
Justifications for escalation and the “shutdown” scenario
The Revolutionary Guard justified the attack by claiming that the tanker “Prima” ignored “repeated warnings” issued by its naval forces.
Additionally, it indicated that the attack was part of its recent decision to impose a “combat zone” through the Strait of Hormuz.
This escalation on the ground comes as a direct response to what the statement described
as a “joint attack” launched by the United States and Israel against Iranian territory earlier.
Tehran, in its statement through Revolutionary Guard commanders,
emphasized that it “will not allow any oil tanker to pass through the Persian Gulf” as long as the threats against it continue.
Furthermore, this represents an explicit declaration of its intention to use the Strait of Hormuz as a tool of military and political pressure.
Expected international repercussions
This attack represents a serious violation of international maritime security
in a region through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply passes.
Observers believe that targeting a vessel flying a European flag (Malta) could provoke a strong international response.
These concerns come amid the potential for a full-blown confrontation in territorial waters.
Furthermore, global markets are closely watching the impact of this news on energy prices.
Prices have already begun to rise significantly since the statement was released.
