Damascus, Syria – In a strategic move aimed at preserving national sovereignty and securing Syria’s borders, units of the Syrian Arab Army announced today a large-scale deployment along the border strip with both Lebanon and Iraq. These movements come within the framework of comprehensive precautionary and organizational defensive measures aimed at controlling international borders and enhancing security and stability in light of the rapidly evolving regional circumstances.
Deployment objectives: To combat “organized smuggling networks”
According to the Ministry of Defense’s Media and Communications Department, this field operation focuses primarily on ending the era of security abuses that flourished during the years of the “former regime.” These abuses thrived when organized criminal networks exploited the rugged terrain and unofficial border crossings to carry out illicit activities. These activities included arms and drug smuggling and threatening civil peace.
The Ministry of Defense confirmed in a statement to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) that:
Sovereign Missions: The deployment falls within the constitutional responsibilities of the army to protect the international borders of the Syrian Arab Republic.
Preventing Illegal Activities: The forces aim to close all gaps that could be exploited by militias or smuggling gangs operating across the borders.
Defensive Nature: The Ministry stressed that this step is “purely defensive and organizational” and does not target any neighboring country or political entity. Rather, it aims solely to regulate official border traffic.
Field tactics: continuous reconnaissance and surveillance
On the ground, border guard units, supported by advanced reconnaissance battalions, have begun taking up strategic positions and establishing fixed and mobile observation posts.
These units are conducting continuous field and aerial reconnaissance of the border strip to ensure it remains free of any suspicious activity.
This extensive deployment will contribute to an immediate reduction in smuggling operations and illicit economic activities that have burdened the state in recent times. It also paves the way for the state to regain full control over its vital border crossings.
Strengthening regional security
Observers believe that securing Syria’s borders with Lebanon and Iraq at this sensitive time is crucial to preventing the spillover of regional chaos into Syria.
It also thwarts attempts to exploit these borders as platforms for destabilizing neighboring countries. Through this step, Damascus reaffirms its commitment to protecting its national borders as an integral part of its comprehensive national security strategy.
