Beirut, Lebanon – In a move described as the “boldest” in the history of modern Lebanese governments, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam announced on Monday a ban on all security and military activities belonging to Hezbollah, effective immediately. This historic decision came in response to the group’s firing of rockets toward Israel on Sunday evening. The government considered this act a “blatant violation” of state authority and a threat to the interests of the Lebanese people.
State sovereignty is above all
In an official statement issued after an extraordinary session, the Cabinet affirmed that the decision of war and peace is “the sole and exclusive right of the Lebanese state.” The statement also emphasized its absolute rejection of any military actions launched from Lebanese territory outside the framework of legitimate institutions. It clarified that Hezbollah’s missile activities contradict the will of the majority and undermine the credibility of the state. For this reason, Hezbollah’s military activities were declared “illegal,” and it was obligated to surrender its weapons. Furthermore, its political activities were confined to constitutional frameworks.
Firm military orders
The government did not limit itself to the political aspect; it issued explicit orders to all security and military agencies to take immediate action to prevent the launching of any missiles or drones and to arrest violators in accordance with applicable laws. The government also instructed the Lebanese Army Command to immediately and decisively begin implementing the security plan (presented on February 16, 2026). This plan aims to confine weapons north of the Litani River, employing “all means” to ensure the enforcement of sovereignty and the protection of national security.
International move to ensure calm
In parallel with internal measures, the Cabinet called on the guarantor states of the cessation of hostilities to pressure Israel. The aim was to secure a clear and definitive commitment to halt all attacks on Lebanese territory. This step was intended to remove any pretext that could lead Lebanon into a full-blown regional war, as the country lacks the resources to confront such a conflict.
moment of truth
This decision represents a “sovereign turning point,” placing the Lebanese state in direct confrontation with the network of illegal weapons. Observers believe the success of this step depends primarily on the Lebanese army’s capabilities on the ground. It also hinges on the extent of international support Lebanon receives to consolidate its internal stability. Furthermore, it is crucial to prevent Lebanon from becoming an arena for settling regional scores.
