Brussels, Belgium – In a firm diplomatic move reflecting growing concern over the deteriorating situation in the Middle East, the European Union condemned in the strongest terms the recent Iranian attacks targeting several countries in the region.
The EU described these operations as a “flagrant violation of national sovereignty and an unacceptable escalation.” It also stated that they are pushing regional security and stability to the brink.
Brussels meeting: Sanctions threatened, and warnings of a shipping shutdown issued
This came in a concluding statement following an emergency meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, dedicated to discussing the rapidly escalating repercussions of Iranian attacks on energy security and international navigation. The ministers threatened to impose an additional and stricter package of sanctions against Tehran. They also emphasized that the continued escalation poses a grave threat to the safety of vital waterways, particularly the Strait of Hormuz. They stated that this directly threatens global energy supplies and markets.
Kaya Kallas: Protecting European interests is a top priority
For her part, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, affirmed that the EU is monitoring the situation in Iran and the Middle East with “grave concern.”
Kallas explained that the EU will not hesitate to protect its security and strategic interests through political and economic means. She also stressed the need to immediately halt indiscriminate attacks and refrain from any actions that could lead to a wider conflict.
Kallas reiterated the bloc’s call for Iran to end its nuclear program and fully comply with the Non-Proliferation Treaty. She also emphasized the need to cease destabilizing activities in the region and on the European continent. Furthermore, she called for comprehensive and unconditional cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
International solidarity and a call for restraint
In its statement, the European Union expressed its full solidarity with the countries that were attacked or affected by the attacks, reaffirming its unwavering commitment to supporting regional stability and protecting civilian lives. The ministers stressed that the Middle East would be the “biggest loser” should the situation escalate into a protracted war. They also called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and adhere to the UN Charter and international humanitarian law.
The statement concluded by emphasizing that ensuring the safety of nuclear facilities and respecting freedom of navigation are “top priorities” for the international community. It also warned Tehran that continuing its escalatory approach would lead to deeper international isolation and severe economic consequences.
