Abu Dhabi, UAE – Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aty held a telephone conversation with US Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Wittkopf. This came within the framework of ongoing coordination and consultation between Cairo and Washington on regional issues of mutual interest, primarily the Iranian nuclear program and developments in the Gaza Strip.
Nuclear negotiations with Iran
The call addressed the latest round of negotiations between the United States and Iran, held in Geneva, regarding the Iranian nuclear program. The Egyptian Foreign Minister affirmed his country’s support for diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving outstanding issues and addressing concerns related to the nuclear file through negotiation. He also stressed the importance of continuing the negotiation process and avoiding escalation. Furthermore, he called for working towards compromise solutions that serve the interests of all parties and support regional stability.
Developments in Gaza
The two sides also discussed the latest developments in the Gaza Strip, in light of the first meeting of the Peace Council held in Washington on February 19. Abdel-Aati stressed the need to expedite the implementation of the second phase of the American plan. He also affirmed support for the National Committee for the Administration of the Gaza Strip. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of deploying an international stabilization force to ensure adherence to the ceasefire.
Supporting regional stability
The Egyptian minister stressed the importance of the continued flow of humanitarian aid to all parts of the Gaza Strip, paving the way for recovery and reconstruction efforts.
For his part, Witkoff praised Egypt’s role in supporting regional security and stability. He also commended Cairo’s efforts in containing crises and promoting political solutions that contribute to calming tensions in the region.
