Washington, DC – Axios reports that the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff warned President Donald Trump and senior administration officials that any military attack on Iran could entail significant risks.
These risks include being drawn into a protracted conflict and suffering high casualties among US forces.
Division within the administration
According to an Axios report, there is debate and disagreement at the highest levels of the Trump administration regarding how to deal with Iran.
While some advisors emphasize the need for caution and a thorough assessment of the strategic implications of
any military action, sources indicate that Trump himself has shown a leaning toward the attack option.
In contrast, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkopf have urged the president to exercise restraint and give the diplomatic track another chance.
They have also warned of the risks of a wider regional confrontation and its political and military repercussions.
Axios and commitment to the presidential decree
Axios reported that the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff adopted a cautious approach
during meetings concerning Iran, offering cost-and-risk assessments.
However, he emphasized that he would implement the decision if made by the President, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief.
Meanwhile, prominent US Senator Lindsey Graham is among the leading advocates for military action against Tehran. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for his part, is concerned that Washington might back down from the strike option.
