Cairo, Egypt – The Arab Republic of Egypt has expressed its keen interest and deep concern regarding the issues raised concerning the lists of coordinates and the map deposited with the United Nations.
This pertains to the maritime zones between the State of Kuwait and the Republic of Iraq.
Prioritizing the language of reason and wisdom
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement issued Monday, affirmed the importance of respecting the rules and principles of international law.
This includes the provisions of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
It also stressed the importance of adhering to relevant understandings between the two sides.
Egypt emphasized the necessity of prioritizing reason and wisdom, based on the fraternal ties and historical relations that bind Arab states.
This is particularly crucial given the extremely delicate and sensitive regional circumstances.
The region is witnessing grave challenges and an unprecedented escalation.
Therefore, cooperation, solidarity, and prioritizing dialogue are essential to confronting these challenges, according to the statement.
Egypt… and respect for the sovereignty of the State of Kuwait
Cairo also emphasized the importance of respecting the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the State of Kuwait.
Furthermore, it stressed ensuring non-interference with its maritime borders.
It expressed its full readiness to provide all forms of support to both countries to bridge their differences
and reach mutually agreed-upon understandings.
Importantly, this would be in accordance with the rules of international law
and in a manner that enhances security and stability in the region.
Egypt expressed its confidence in the ability of both countries to address this issue in a spirit of understanding and good neighborliness.
In addition, this should be done in a way that safeguards their interests and contributes to maintaining regional stability.
Kuwait had previously delivered a formal protest note to the Iraqi authorities following Iraq’s submission of a list of coordinates and a map to the United Nations.
This list includes claims related to Iraqi maritime areas.
