Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Sunday a heavy toll from Russian airstrikes during a single week in February. He also confirmed that crucial agreements had been reached with his country’s partners in Munich to secure military and energy support packages before the anniversary of the war on February 24.
The outcome of the attacks: a systematic targeting of energy infrastructure and civilians.
In a statement posted on his official X account, Zelensky revealed that in the past week alone, Russia launched approximately 1,300 attack drones, more than 1,200 guided bombs, and 50 missiles, mostly ballistic missiles. The Ukrainian president explained that the regions of Odessa, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Sumy were subjected to intense attacks today. He also noted that the energy sector remains Moscow’s “primary target,” as it seeks to destroy power plants and the electricity grid. Furthermore, he stated that residential infrastructure is being directly targeted.
Munich Agreement: Support packages by February 24
On the diplomatic front, Zelenskyy delivered positive news following his participation in the Munich Security Conference. He announced an agreement with the leaders of the Berlin Format on specific aid packages covering military and energy sectors. These packages are scheduled to arrive in Ukraine by February 24. Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude to international partners, emphasizing that air defense is his country’s top and most important daily priority. This priority aims to prevent Russia from using air terrorism as a tool of influence and pressure.
Air defenses hold firm
Despite the heavy bombardment, Zelensky praised the air defense forces who successfully intercepted a significant portion of the Russian missiles and drones. However, he warned against complacency, emphasizing the continued need to bolster defenses to save civilian lives and secure remaining vital infrastructure. These statements come at a sensitive time, as pressure mounts on the Ukrainian front lines. This coincides with intensive international efforts in Munich to ensure continued Western support for Kyiv as the war enters its second year.
