Brussels, Belgium – NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirms that member states are currently pledging hundreds of millions of dollars to support a vital initiative aimed at addressing Ukraine’s urgent military needs. This will be achieved through work on a “priority requests list.” Notably, this list places a primary focus on providing Kyiv with advanced American weaponry.
NATO strengthens Ukraine’s defense
Rutte explained in remarks made during a press conference in Brussels that the agreement came within the framework of joint coordination among NATO member states to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities as the war continues.
He noted that the announced funding represents a new installment in a series of military commitments
made by the Alliance to support Kyiv since the outbreak of the conflict.
The Secretary General thanked several countries that announced their contributions in this regard, including the United Kingdom, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Lithuania.
He emphasized that these pledges reflect a collective commitment to continue supporting Ukraine.
He added that he expects further announcements of new contributions in the coming period,
without specifying the names of the countries or the expected amounts.
Needs of Ukrainian forces
Rutte did not disclose the exact total value of the pledged funds. However, he stressed that the alliance’s initiative
aims to expedite procurement and supply operations according to the most urgent field needs of the Ukrainian forces.
The Secretary General’s remarks came during a joint press conference with the defense ministers of Britain, Germany, and Ukraine.
During this event, they discussed ways to enhance military coordination and intensify logistical and financial support for Kyiv.
This announcement comes at a time when Western countries are intensifying their efforts to ensure the sustainability of military support for Ukraine.
These actions unfold amidst ongoing discussions within the alliance regarding financing mechanisms
and burden-sharing among member states, in order to guarantee that Ukraine’s defense needs are met in the short and medium term.
