Washington, United States – Former US Ambassador to Turkey and US Special Envoy to Syria, James Jeffrey, said that former President Donald Trump was likely to conclude a nuclear agreement with Iran.
He will declare it a “political victory,” even though the bulk of Iran’s nuclear program remains hidden.
Diplomatic details of the agreement
Jeffrey explained during a panel discussion hosted by the SETA Institute
that the nuclear agreement would address the core aspects of the Iranian program.
However, he cautioned that most of the nuclear activities remained underground.
When asked about the possibility of reaching an agreement through negotiations or military action,
he said: “Diplomatically, I believe an agreement will be reached.”
He suggested that the deployment of a US naval fleet in the region might be merely a political ploy to put pressure on Iran.
The role of the “Great US Fleet”
Jeffrey added that the so-called “Great US Fleet” or “Armada” in the Middle East may be a tool
for psychological and political influence, but it is not an actual threat of military action.
He stressed that the United States is seeking a diplomatic solution before any escalation.
The former ambassador noted that the agreement, if finalized, would allow Trump to claim a domestic political victory.
Furthermore, it would temporarily ease tensions with Iran, but would not address all aspects of the clandestine nuclear program.
He also warned that any failure in the negotiations could push the region towards a new escalation.
Jeffrey stressed that upcoming events will determine whether the agreement will be fully achieved diplomatically.
Or the United States might resort to military and economic pressure to ensure Iran’s compliance with the conditions.
