Oslo, Norway – The Norwegian Nobel Committee issued a statement expressing its deep concern over credible reports of the ill-treatment of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi while in detention in Iran. The Committee confirmed that information it received from reliable and credible sources inside Iran indicates that Mohammadi has been subjected to brutal arrest, physical abuse, and ongoing, life-threatening ill-treatment since her arrest on December 12, 2025, while attending the funeral of the late human rights lawyer, Khosrow Aligardi.
According to the statement, Mohammadi was beaten with sticks and batons and dragged to the ground, resulting in injuries to her scalp and other parts of her body. She was also denied adequate medical care despite her condition being recorded as critical cardiac. The Committee deemed this treatment to be cruel, inhuman, and degrading punishment, and a clear violation of international human rights law. It called on the Iranian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Narges Mohammadi and ensure her access to independent and professional medical care. The Committee also urged the international community to continue its efforts to ensure Mohammadi’s safety, the release of all political prisoners and prisoners of conscience, and the protection of their fundamental human rights and dignity. It noted that Mohammadi’s ordeal is a stark example of the brutal repression that followed widespread protests in Iran.
