Europe – European Union leaders held an emergency meeting at the historic Alden Bessen Castle in an attempt to coordinate a unified stance against the erratic policies of the United States under President Donald Trump.
The talks addressed the issue of tariffs and trade pressures, as well as Trump’s past attempts to reshape international alliances to serve Washington’s interests at the expense of its European partners. European officials emphasized the need to strengthen the EU’s economic and political integration to counter any future surprises from the US administration.
A senior European diplomat said the meeting “comes at a sensitive time, to ensure that the European Union does not fall prey to the vagaries of American policy.”
The historic castle hosted closed-door sessions during which joint strategies for strengthening European economic and political security were discussed, with a focus on supporting domestic industries and protecting European markets from any external pressure.
The meeting reflects the EU’s desire to build an independent and balanced European position, capable of dealing with major powers without compromising its strategic interests.
