Cairo, Egypt – Egypt called for a comprehensive and immediate ceasefire in Sudan and stressed the necessity of launching an inclusive, purely nationally owned political process to end the current crisis and pave the way for restoring security and stability in the country. Meanwhile, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aty, during his chairmanship of the informal consultations of the African Union Peace and Security Council at the ministerial level regarding developments in Sudan, affirmed that stability in Sudan is a pressing regional imperative. He also warned of the repercussions of the continued conflict on regional security, explaining the potential for the spread of chaos and weapons and the escalation of terrorist threats.
Abdel-Aty stressed the importance of reaching a comprehensive ceasefire, in parallel with launching an effective humanitarian corridor that ensures aid reaches those in need without hindrance. He affirmed that a comprehensive political solution, based on Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue, remains the only way to end the crisis, preserving Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity and safeguarding its national institutions. Egypt also reiterated its full support for Sudan’s unity and its rejection of any attempts to undermine its sovereignty or divide it. It called for enhanced coordination among various regional and international tracks, in addition to supporting the efforts of the Quartet to advance the political settlement process. These moves come within the framework of Egypt’s chairmanship of the Peace and Security Council this month. Furthermore, Egypt is keen to intensify African efforts aimed at restoring stability in Sudan, stemming from its responsibility and role in supporting peace and security on the African continent.
