Washington, DC – US President Donald Trump announced that the United States is prepared to resort to military action against Iran if negotiations between Washington and Tehran fail to produce a new agreement. This came during an interview with Israel’s Channel 2. Trump stated, “Either we reach an agreement, or we will have to take very strong action, as we did last time,” referring to previous US military operations against Iranian targets. He added that the United States would be ready to act swiftly if the talks collapse. He also emphasized that bolstering the US military presence in the Gulf region provides additional leverage over Tehran. Trump’s remarks indicated that he is considering deploying a second aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East as part of this military buildup. This comes amid escalating tensions with Iran over its nuclear program and its crackdown on protesters within the country.
These remarks come as he prepares to begin a new round of US-Iranian talks next week, in an effort to ease tensions and reach a diplomatic agreement. Trump has welcomed the possibility of a deal, saying the Iranians “very much want it.” But he has also expressed frustration at the continued challenges. These comments have raised concerns in the region and in Western countries. This comes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu heads to Washington for talks with Trump that will include discussions on Iran policy and regional security.
Trump addressed his upcoming meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, explaining that he would focus on the Iranian issue during their conversation the following day. He also noted that Netanyahu was not worried about the negotiations with Iran and that he wanted an agreement. Trump added, “Iran desperately wants to reach an agreement, and the negotiations that took place in Amman last Friday were completely different from the talks before the twelve-day war in June. This time, Iran is taking a more flexible approach. Last time, they didn’t believe I would launch an attack; they took a much bigger gamble.”
On the eve of his meeting with US President Donald Trump, Netanyahu said on Tuesday that his talks in Washington would focus on negotiations with Iran. This comes as he seeks to urge Washington to adopt a tougher stance on Tehran’s ballistic missile program. Meanwhile, Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, warned the United States against Israel’s “sabotaging role in the nuclear negotiations.” He also called on the Americans to “remain vigilant and not allow Netanyahu to influence the framework of these talks.”
