Bogotá, Colombia – Colombian President Gustavo Petro survived an assassination attempt last night while traveling in a presidential helicopter over the Caribbean. The president confirmed that the attack targeted his life, but he escaped unharmed after the helicopter diverted to a safe location.

The presidency stated that the president had received prior security warnings about a possible plot. It also indicated that the attack stemmed from threats from unknown sources believed to be linked to drug trafficking gangs. Petro added that the security threats forced him to alter his travel plans. He also changed his flight routes regularly to ensure his safety and the safety of his entourage.

This incident comes at a politically sensitive time for Colombia, with tensions rising ahead of elections. It highlights the serious security threats faced by the country’s political leaders.

Official reactions in Colombia and internationally have emphasized the need to strengthen security measures around political leaders. They have also stressed the importance of launching a thorough investigation into the incident.
