Damascus, Syria – Rescue teams in Syria announced the recovery of the bodies of four people who died after being trapped in a deep pit. The incident occurred while they were conducting unauthorized excavations in search of antiquities in the Jableh area of Latakia Governorate.
According to local sources, the victims were digging at a site believed to be archaeological when part of the pit collapsed on them. As a result, they were trapped for several hours, and rescue teams faced significant challenges due to the confined space and the hazardous soil.
The incident has sparked widespread debate about the dangers of unregulated archaeological digging, particularly given the prevalence of illegal excavations driven by the search for historical treasures. This practice exposes participants to serious risks and threatens archaeological sites.
Authorities have called for adherence to the laws regulating excavation activities and warned of the humanitarian and legal consequences of such practices, which can lead to tragic disasters.
