Kyiv, Ukraine – The Ukrainian General Staff announced on Saturday that Ukrainian forces had carried out an attack targeting an oil depot in Russia’s Saratov region, as part of ongoing military operations between the two sides since the outbreak of the war.
In a statement published on Telegram, the General Staff said the attack targeted
an oil depot known as “Balashovo,” without disclosing the extent of the damage or potential casualties.
It added that Ukrainian forces also targeted several drone control centers located in Russian-controlled territory.
Escalating attacks between Moscow and Kyiv
This announcement comes amid an escalation of attacks between Moscow and Kyiv,
with Ukraine having recently intensified its strikes on energy facilities and infrastructure deep inside Russia,
in an attempt to weaken Russian logistical and military capabilities, according to Ukrainian authorities.
The Saratov region, located in southeastern Russia, is home to important energy and industrial facilities,
giving it strategic importance in the context of the ongoing conflict.
There has been no official comment from the Russian side confirming
or denying the attack or clarifying the extent of the damage.
In recent months, Moscow has accused Kyiv of targeting civilian and vital infrastructure inside Russia using drones and long-range missiles,
while Ukraine maintains that its operations are focused on military targets or facilities used to support Russian combat operations.
War on several fronts
The reported bombing comes at a time of significant escalation in the war on several fronts,
amid continued Western military support for Ukraine and Russia’s assertion of
its determination to continue its military operations until its stated objectives are achieved.
Recent developments indicate that the conflict remains poised for further escalation,
with the scope of military operations expanding to include vital facilities within Russian territory,
while Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure continue,
exacerbating the humanitarian and economic consequences of the war, which has now lasted for more than two years.
