Baghdad, Iraq – The Coordination Framework in Iraq, an alliance of Shiite political forces, affirmed its support for former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki as a candidate for the premiership.
It also stressed that the selection of the head of government is
a constitutionally mandated internal matter and does not accept any external interference.
The framework stated in a press release that the mechanisms for selecting the prime minister must be
in accordance with the Iraqi constitution and the will of the elected political forces within parliament.
It asserted that any external pressure or warnings constitute
an infringement upon national sovereignty and the political process in the country.
Respecting the choices of Iraqis
This stance comes after statements by US President Donald Trump in
which he warned Iraq against reappointing Nouri al-Maliki, who is seen as being close to Iran.
Washington may be prompted to halt aid to Iraq, despite it being one of the largest oil producers in the region.
The coordination framework stressed that the current stage requires respecting the choices of Iraqis
and working towards the political and economic stability of the country, away from external dictates.
He pointed out that past experiences have proven that international interventions
do not serve the path to stability and do not meet the aspirations of the Iraqi people.
sharp tensions
Nouri al-Maliki is one of the most prominent political figures in Iraq, having served two consecutive terms
as prime minister. He remains a pivotal player in the political landscape, particularly among Shia political forces.
His renomination is causing controversy both domestically and internationally,
given the differing opinions regarding his past policies and regional relations.
Observers believe the Coordination Framework’s stance reflects its adherence to its political choices.
This comes at a time when the Iraqi political scene is witnessing sharp
disagreements regarding the formation of the next government.
This is occurring amidst economic and security challenges, and increasing international pressure.
The coming days are expected to witness intense activity
among Iraqi political blocs in an attempt to reach a consensus on the next prime minister.
This ensures the formation of a government capable of managing the next phase
and achieving a degree of balance in Iraq’s regional and international relations.
