Damascus, Syria – Mazloum Abdi, the commander-in-chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), affirmed that a ceasefire is the core and foundation of any existing understandings with the Syrian government. He emphasized that consolidating the truce is the only way to open serious political and security tracks that will end years of attrition and alleviate the suffering of civilians.
Abdi explained that any agreement not based on a clear commitment to halting military operations and guaranteeing the protection of the population will not be sustainable. He pointed out that the understandings with Damascus primarily aim to reduce escalation and provide a stable environment conducive to dialogue. Furthermore, he clarified that these understandings aim to prevent a return to confrontation.
He added that stability in northern and eastern Syria requires respecting the signed agreements and refraining from military solutions. He also asserted that the success of any political process hinges on translating the ceasefire into tangible reality on the ground, not merely pledges.
Abdi’s statement comes at a time when regional and international efforts are intensifying to push the Syrian parties toward a lasting truce. However, there are concerns that any new violation could undermine the chances of a solution and reignite the conflict.
Mazloum Abdi: The ceasefire is the “heart of the agreement” with Damascus and a red line that cannot be compromised.
