Washington, DC – The United States imposed a new round of sanctions today targeting Iran’s Interior Minister and several other officials. This move reflects a new escalation of US pressure on Tehran, stemming from accusations of human rights abuses and the role of security forces in suppressing protests.
The US Treasury Department stated that the sanctions include freezing the assets of the targeted individuals under US jurisdiction, as well as prohibiting financial transactions with them. It emphasized that the decision is part of a policy of “accountability” for those responsible for what it described as “serious human rights violations.”
Washington explained that these measures aim to send a clear message that the international community will not stand idly by in the face of what is happening inside Iran. It stressed that the sanctions could be expanded in the coming period to include other individuals and entities.
In response, Tehran is expected to react strongly, considering the sanctions a “blatant interference” in its internal affairs. This comes at a time of escalating tensions between the two sides on multiple issues, from the nuclear program to regional developments.
This US move is part of a series of successive measures. This reflects that a rapprochement between Washington and Tehran is still far off, and that sanctions remain the preferred pressure tool on the table of American politics.
