Vienna, Austria – The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has warned that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine currently poses the greatest threat to nuclear safety worldwide. This comes amid continued military operations near sensitive nuclear facilities, creating unprecedented risks.

The IAEA emphasized that fighting around nuclear power plants, particularly the Zaporizhzhia plant, significantly increases the likelihood of serious accidents. Such accidents could have far-reaching regional and international consequences. The agency stressed that any malfunction in safety systems could lead to a catastrophe extending beyond the borders of the affected country.

The IAEA called on all parties to exercise restraint and respect international rules prohibiting the targeting or endangerment of nuclear facilities. It also emphasized the need to ensure access for inspection and technical support teams to maintain the highest safety standards.

This warning comes at a time of growing international concern that the Ukrainian conflict could become a transnational threat. This threat extends beyond military and political dimensions, impacting the security of the entire global nuclear community.
