Jerusalem, Palestine– The Israeli authorities’ move to demolish the oldest headquarters of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Jerusalem has sparked widespread international concern.
This comes amid warnings that the move represents a dangerous escalation that could exacerbate tensions in the city and threaten peace efforts in the region.
Essential services for refugees
The agency said the historic building, which had been a symbol of humanitarian work for decades,
housed its departments and provided vital services to Palestinian refugees.
She noted that its demolition directly harms the basic rights of refugees and puts her work under constant threat.
UNRWA… and the outbreak of new clashes
Experts and observers have confirmed that this move could open the door to
a series of similar actions against international institutions in Jerusalem.
This raises the level of political tension and increases the likelihood of new clashes breaking out in the city.
UNRWA also called on the international community and the United Nations
to intervene urgently to prevent further damage to historic buildings and headquarters.
She warned that silence could encourage similar steps that could threaten the stability of the entire region.
