Tokyo, Japan – A 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck Hokkaido Prefecture in northern Japan today, causing widespread concern among residents, though there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the quake occurred at a moderate depth
and was felt in several nearby areas. No tsunami warnings were issued following the tremor.
Earthquake, possibility of aftershocks
Local authorities confirmed that vital infrastructure and transportation systems were unaffected by the earthquake,
noting that they are continuing to monitor the situation in anticipation of possible aftershocks,
especially since the region is one of the most seismically active in the country.
Japan experiences thousands of earthquakes annually of varying magnitudes,
thanks to its geographical location on the Pacific Ring of Fire,
making it one of the world’s most prepared countries for natural disasters.
