Damascus, Syria – The Syrian Presidency stated that President Ahmed al-Sharaa, during a telephone call with US President Donald Trump, emphasized the importance of unifying international efforts to prevent the resurgence of terrorist organizations, particularly the Islamic State, stressing that combating terrorism is a shared priority for maintaining the security and stability of the region.
In a statement, the Presidency indicated that the call addressed developments in the regional situation and ways to deal with escalating security challenges. President al-Sharaa affirmed that the return of extremist organizations poses a direct threat to regional and international peace, necessitating effective and comprehensive international coordination that goes beyond piecemeal solutions and relies on an integrated security and political approach.
The statement added that the two presidents agreed on the necessity of prioritizing dialogue and diplomacy in addressing regional conflicts. It noted that al-Sharaa emphasized that “active diplomacy” represents the most successful path to overcoming the chronic crises plaguing the region and mitigating their political and humanitarian repercussions.
During the call, the Syrian president affirmed his country’s complete commitment to its territorial integrity and national sovereignty, and its rejection of any attempts to undermine state institutions or destabilize the country. He emphasized the Syrian government’s commitment to strengthening civil peace and preserving the social fabric in light of the existing security and economic challenges.
According to the statement, the call also addressed the importance of supporting efforts aimed at consolidating stability and preventing security vacuums that extremist organizations could exploit to regroup or expand their activities. He stressed that international coordination plays a pivotal role in this regard.
This call comes at a time when the region is witnessing intensive diplomatic activity and efforts to reorder security priorities, amid warnings of attempts by the Islamic State group to exploit hotspots of tension and instability to return to the scene, which brings the fight against terrorism back to the forefront of international attention.
