Washington, DC – In an interview with the New York Post, US President Donald Trump stated that the United States intends to assert its sovereignty over areas in Greenland that include US military bases. He affirmed that ongoing negotiations on this matter are progressing in a direction that serves Washington’s interests. Trump explained, “We’re going to get everything we want… We have some very interesting conversations going on right now,” referring to discussions concerning the future of the US presence on the island.
The newspaper reported that one of the proposals under discussion falls short of full US ownership of Greenland, but would grant the United States sovereignty over existing military bases there. These bases include the Petofik Space Base. Trump had previously announced that, following his meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, the outlines of potential agreements concerning Greenland had been established. He indicated that such an agreement, if finalized, would be “a satisfactory solution for the United States and all NATO countries.” He also asserted that Washington would obtain everything it wanted from Greenland as a result of the ongoing negotiations.
