Jakarta, Indonesia – Seven people have died and about 80 are missing after a powerful landslide struck a mountainous region on the Indonesian island of Java. The landslide was triggered by torrential rains that transformed the soil into a raging torrent of mud. The resulting flash floods swept away homes and buried roads in moments.
Local authorities reported that rescue teams are facing significant difficulties reaching the disaster site due to the continuing rain and blocked roads. Furthermore, there are fears that the death toll could rise as dozens remain trapped under the rubble.
The Indonesian disaster agency has declared a state of maximum emergency in the region. It has deployed additional army units and volunteers, and is using heavy equipment and search dogs in a race against time to find survivors.
Indonesia is one of the countries most prone to such natural disasters due to its mountainous terrain and heavy seasonal rainfall. As a result, landslides are a frequent threat to lives and property, especially in rural areas with limited infrastructure.
