Chiba, Japan – Police in Asahi City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, have arrested a 29-year-old man suspected of involvement in a hit-and-run accident that killed an elderly woman last Saturday.

The accident

According to Japan’s NTV, the incident began when police emergency services (110) received a call from a witness around 11 a.m. on Saturday. The witness reported that a small black car struck an elderly woman as she was crossing the road and then sped away without offering assistance. The victim, later identified as 76-year-old Kyō Katori, was crossing the street when the collision occurred. Katori was rushed to the hospital in a coma. She was pronounced dead about an hour later from a severe skull fracture.

Pursuing and surrendering the same

Police used advanced technology to track down the perpetrator, relying on an analysis of CCTV footage from surrounding streets. They also examined spare parts and small pieces of the car wreckage found at the scene. While the investigation was underway, the suspect, identified as Satoshi Ibato, a truck driver, contacted the police at approximately 7:30 p.m. that same day. He confessed to his involvement in the hit-and-run.

legal procedures

Ibato was detained on suspicion of reckless driving causing death, as well as leaving the scene of an accident without reporting it. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the accident and the reasons that led him to initially flee before deciding to turn himself in.
