Seoul, South Korea – South Korea’s National Police Agency announced Friday that it had summoned a civilian for questioning on suspicion of sending drones toward North Korean territory. This move comes amid escalating tensions and military threats between the two neighbors.
Joint Task Force investigations
Police explained that the investigation is being conducted by a “joint task force” comprised of members of the military and the national police. While the agency did not disclose the suspect’s identity or details of his activities, this step aims to determine whether the drones recently discovered in Pyongyang were launched by civilian actors. For example, they could have been launched by activists opposed to the North Korean regime. This would imply that it was not an official military operation.
Pyongyang’s narrative: “You will pay a heavy price.”
These investigations come just days after the North Korean military announced it had shot down South Korean drones using electronic warfare technology.
Pyongyang confirmed it had intercepted a drone earlier this month and another in September. It also claimed to have extracted video footage from the drones showing locations inside North Korea. Seoul has officially warned that it will “pay a heavy price” if such violations of its sovereignty are repeated.
Seoul between denial and investigation
For its part, the South Korean government and military officially denied that the drone attack originated from the armed forces. However, Seoul formed a specialized investigation team to ascertain the facts. It also raised the possibility that civilian groups or individuals launched the drones independently. Consequently, authorities summoned the suspect today.
Context of the crisis
The drone incident is the latest chapter in the technological and security conflict on the Korean Peninsula, with both countries accusing each other of violating airspace. This is happening amid international concerns that these mutual provocations could lead to a direct and unpredictable military confrontation.
