Tehran, Iran – Iranian authorities reopened their airspace to international air traffic early Thursday morning, following a temporary closure of several hours amid reports of concerns about a possible US military escalation against Iran in support of protesters in the streets.
Closure details
The Iranian air embargo lasted for five consecutive hours, during which most incoming and outgoing flights were suspended. The closure ended at 3:30 a.m. UTC, which corresponds to 10:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday. This precautionary measure was taken amid heightened security concerns and fears of potential US military strikes. This has increased the risk level for commercial airlines operating in the region.
Air traffic
According to live data from FlightRadar24, a website specializing in flight tracking, most international aircraft continued to fly close to the Iranian border and avoid Iranian airspace until 4:00 AM UTC, despite the official lifting of the ban. Meanwhile, some Iranian domestic airlines began resuming their scheduled flights immediately after the restrictions were lifted. This temporary closure reflects the heightened tensions in the region. For this reason, international airlines are constantly reviewing their routes to ensure passenger safety amid the threat of US intervention in Iran.
