Beirut, Lebanon – Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun announced his full and complete support for the statement issued by the Lebanese Army Command regarding the “Shield of the Nation” plan. He affirmed that the state, with all its institutions, stands behind the armed forces in their historic mission to extend sovereignty over all national territory, particularly in the area south of the Litani River.
Exclusive use of force and prevention of hostilities
In a statement read by the official spokesperson for the Presidency, Najat Sharafeddine, President Aoun emphasized that the army’s deployment in the south is a “comprehensive national decision.” This decision is based on the constitution and international obligations. The President explained that the strategic objective of this step is:
Establishing the exclusivity of weapons: confining military power to the Lebanese state only.
Sovereignty of decision: Enshrining the principle that the decision of war and peace belongs exclusively to constitutional institutions.
Permanent stability: Preventing the use of Lebanese territory as a launching pad for any military operations once and for all.
Challenges of Israeli sovereignty and occupation
The President linked the success of establishing stability to addressing external violations. He pointed out that Israel’s continued occupation of parts of Lebanese territory, the establishment of buffer zones, and the ongoing air and sea violations constitute a major obstacle to extending the state’s full authority. They also represent a direct threat to the security of civilians.
A call to the international community and capacity building support
President Aoun reaffirmed Lebanon’s commitment to the cessation of hostilities agreement. He urgently called upon the international community and friendly nations to fulfill their responsibilities by expediting the strengthening of the Lebanese army’s capabilities. The goal is to enable it to carry out its duties. He also emphasized the commitment to preventing the transfer of any weapons to any party within Lebanon except the official armed forces. Furthermore, he stressed the need to ensure that all parties adhere to the cessation of violations and refrain from unilateral actions.
A message of confidence to the army and the people of the South
President Aoun concluded his statement by reaffirming his deep confidence in the army’s leadership, officers, and soldiers, praising their sacrifices on the battlefield. He also expressed his appreciation to the people of southern Lebanon for their resilience and steadfastness on their land. He emphasized that the state and the army are the sole authorities responsible for protection, promising them that this trust “will not be betrayed.”
