Cairo, Egypt – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi met today with Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister of Egypt, Dr. Amr Talaat, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Lieutenant General Ahmed al-Shazly, Advisor to the President of the Republic for Financial Affairs, Major General Khaled Ahmed Abdullah, Head of the Financial Affairs Authority of the Armed Forces, Major General Hani Mahmoud Mansour, Director of the Signal Department of the Armed Forces, and Engineer Mohamed Shamroukh, CEO of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority.
During the meeting, President El-Sisi reviewed the strategic pillars for developing the telecommunications industry and strengthening the knowledge-based economy. The Minister of Communications presented the latest digital service packages, most notably 5G mobile services, which represent a qualitative leap in network quality and speeds. He also highlighted the WiFi Calling service, which has improved call quality in areas with weak coverage. Additionally, he announced the inauguration of the National Center for Monitoring Spectrum Usage, which includes fixed and mobile stations and portable equipment for high-precision spectrum occupancy monitoring.
Sisi was also briefed on the plan to support mobile and internet networks in cities, villages, and remote areas, with an emphasis on transforming the telecommunications sector into a productive service sector that effectively contributes to economic growth.
Over the past seven years, the sector has achieved the highest growth rates in the country, ranging between 14% and 16%. Its contribution to GDP has increased to approximately 6%.
The meeting addressed the implementation status of digital infrastructure development projects nationwide. These projects included replacing the copper network with fiber optics and expanding the network of mobile towers to improve service quality. The pivotal role of the private sector in implementing digital development plans was emphasized.
At the conclusion of the meeting, President El-Sisi emphasized the importance of opening new horizons for developing the local telecommunications industry. This includes manufacturing devices locally and developing data centers and cloud computing services. Mechanisms must be put in place to support and encourage domestic products, thereby strengthening digital transformation and achieving sustainable development.
