Washington, DC – US authorities have unveiled a series of serious criminal charges against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. This follows his arrest and transfer to the United States, paving the way for his appearance before a federal court. The move has been described as unprecedented in relations between the two countries.
The US Department of Justice explained that the indictment includes charges of conspiracy to commit crimes related to what is known as “narco-terrorism.” This alleges his involvement in managing international networks that smuggled cocaine into the United States and used the proceeds to finance illicit activities.
She added that the charges also include conspiracy to import massive quantities of drugs. They also involve coordination with armed groups and transnational criminal organizations. Furthermore, they include possession of prohibited weapons and combat equipment, in direct violation of US federal laws.
According to official statements, the case is being heard in a federal court in New York. Some of the events date back several years. Washington asserts that it possesses evidence, documents, and testimonies that support the charges against Maduro and several of his close associates within the Venezuelan government.
In contrast, Venezuelan authorities have not issued a detailed official statement regarding the nature of the charges. Political figures in Caracas have described the events as a “dangerous escalation” and a “blatant interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state.”
These developments are expected to provoke widespread international reactions. They come amid concerns about legal and political repercussions that could deepen the Venezuelan crisis. Furthermore, they could exacerbate tensions between Washington and several countries supporting Caracas. All eyes are now on the trial and its details in the coming days.
